An evening of fun and laughter with the late great Noel Coward was brought to us by John Clegg, who has entertained the Society on many occasions.
Accompanied by Robert Hewitt at the piano, John revived memories of some of Coward’s most famous songs.
He began with a brief outlne of Coward’s life and work. He was an amazingly versatile man, writing plays, stories, poems, and both words and music for revues, as well as directing and starring in films.
John recited the poem, ‘The Boy Actor’ which gave us an insight into Coward’s early ambitions, and then proceeded to outline the progress of his life in words and music.
Among the songs John performed were ‘The Stately Homes of England’, ‘Don’t Put Your Daughter on the Stage, Mrs Worthngton,’ ‘Mad Dogs and Englishmen’ and many others. He brought a very enjoyable evening to a close with ‘I went to a Marvellous Party’ and ‘Some Day I’ll Find You’.
