We welcome back Caroline Walker for our May ’24 meeting. She is a great- niece of Macdonald “Max” Gill. This time she will speak on Nursery Rhymes of Old London Town by Eleanor Farjeon, illustrated by Macdonald Gill.
His beautifully-executed illustrated maps of the London Underground complete with cartoonish drawings and puns, are credited with saving the underground system.He was also a prolific designer of book jackets and murals.
He designed the alphabet and emblem for the standard military headstone created for the fallen of World War I.
Caroline Walker has written a biography of Max Gill’s life called MacDonald Gill – Charting a Life which was published in 2020. She has been researching his life since 2006 and spends much of her time writing articles, giving lectures and curating exhibitions on his work and maintaining the website
She is an accredited lecturer for The Arts Society. We are looking forward to an entertaining afternoon.
