SUMMARY:T.S.Eliot : Chris Joyce
DESCRIPTION:Dr Chris Joyce is a graduate of Pembroke College\, Cambridge. He was a former Lectures Organiser for the T. S. Eliot Society (UK) and a member of the T. S. Eliot Society in America. \nT.S. Eliot was born in St Louis\, Missouri in 1888. After Harvard he went to Oxford and married an Englishwoman. Although the marriage went sour\, Eliot adopted a very English persona and he became a naturalised British citizen in 1927. For all his love of his adopted country aspects of his American upbringing remained with him for the rest of his life. He died in 1965. In his talk Chris will explore the significance of Eliot’s American background in his work as a poet and critic. \nChris took his PhD in the literary criticism of the inter-war period at the University of Reading following a first degree at Cambridge. He subsequently taught at Reading before becoming the principal tutor of English Literature on the Humanities degree programme at the University of Surrey. He has a specialist interest in the poetry of the Romantic and Victorian periods and in literary Modernism – the work of Yeats\, Joyce and T. S. Eliot in particular. Chris is now an independent lecturer and researcher. He sits on several literary committees and is the organiser of the annual T. S. Eliot Lecture in Cambridge. He is also a member of the T. S. Eliot Society in America\, for which he has lectured at St Louis Missouri and at the Oxford & Cambridge Club in London. He conducts frequent literary events for organisations such as Arts Travel. Upcoming tours will include Tennyson country (Isle of Wight) and Bloomsbury in Sussex. \nWe are delighted to have Chris share his knowledge of Eliot’s work as poet and critic with us. \n
