Dr Brian French

Our Treasurer,  Dr Brian French,  recently visited Egypt and became very interested in the history of writing and the deciphering of Egyptian hieroglyphics. We look forward to hearing about his personal journal of  discovery at our 6 August ’25 meeting.

Brian graduated from Sydney University Medical School in 1968, later acquiring specialist qualifications in both England and Australia. He worked as a Consultant Histopathologist in 6 different countries, including at St Richards Chichester, retiring after a career of almost 50 years. He has since completed numerous Open University modules in a wide variety of subjects.

After visiting Egypt for the first time in 2003, Brian became curious about the hieroglyphic writing system, but another 15 years passed before he began to study it seriously. His presentation will describe his continued interest in the origin, development and decipherment of hieroglyphs, with examples from this ancient literary genre, culminating in a further visit to Luxor last year to read some of the texts in situ, a highlight of which was the little known tomb of Ankhtifi – see illustration below.
