Jeremy Tomlinson

Jeremy has been a regular speaker as well as a guide on many of our outings. He is a founder member of the West Sussex Literary Society and has continued to be a great supporter of the subsequently-formed Chichester Literary Society.

He gained a degree in English at Selwyn College, Cambridge, then moved to University College, Cardiff, where he gained a Certificate of edcucation and began teaching.

After a spell as a bookseller and antique dealer in London and as an archivist in Cumbria, he returned to teaching in 1971, teaching English and Drama at Lancing College. Now retired, he has been Head of Drama, Housemaster, Senior Master and Registrar.

He is the author of books on Lancing College and the Chapel and has also written many articles on literary subjects, as well as being a director of local amateur theatre.

Jeremy has shared his wide knowledge of classical literature with the Society, giving talks on many literary figures including Chaucer, Jane Austen, Byron and the Sackville-West family.

He returned to the Society with members of the Arundel Players to celebrate Jane Austen’s 200th anniversary in February 2016.

He is currently Steward of Lancing Chapel and involved with the Steyning festival.
