Talk on MacDonald (Max) Gill

Caroline Walker, the speaker at the September meeting and a descendant of the Gill family, gave a fascinating talk on Max, younger brother of the more famous Eric.

Her illustrated talk shed light on a remarkable local family – thirteen siblings living in a small cottage in North Walls, Chichester. A plaque on the city wall, site of the cottage, only records Eric and his work. But Max deserves to be more widely known.

His beautifully-executed illustrated maps of the London Underground complete with cartoonish drawings and puns, are credited with saving the underground system.

He was also a prolificdesigner from book jackets to murals and agricultural cottages.

But for me, his main claim to fame in this World War One anniversary year should be his design of the alphabet and emblem for the standard military headstone created for the fallen of that war.

A marvellous insight into a very interesting and talented man.
