General the Lord Richards of Herstmonceux

For our June’25 meeting we are delighted to welcome General the Lord Richards of Herstmonceux who will give an illustrated talk on Operation OVERLORD, Great Plans and Big Egos, Normandy 1944.

He is uniquely placed to explain and discuss the military and political thinking behind the D-Day invasion decision. It was the biggest and most complex military operation of the 20th century.

Lord Richards is a former Chief of Defence Staff. He led operations in East Timor, Sierra Leone and Afghanistan. He commanded the NATO campaign in Afghanistan.  In 2008 he became Commander-in-Chief of Land Forces of the British Army. 2010 saw him become Chief of the Defence Staff, the professional head of Britain’s armed forces. He is known and respected throughout the world for his leadership style and strategic brilliance. His awards include CBE, DSO, and DL. He retired in 2013 and now sits in the House of Lords. He is a visiting professor at Exeter University and Honorary Fellow of both Kings College, London and Cardiff University.

His autobiography “Taking Command” was published in 2014.
