Our summer party this year had an Italian theme with a three course meal prepared and served by Louise and her helpers.
The meal was enlivened between courses with short talks by our member Richard Davies on the Italian diplomat and writer Daniele Vare.
Vare spent many years in China in the early part of the twentieth century – a turbulent time in the country’s history. His novel, ‘The Maker of Heavenly Trousers’ is a fictionalised account of his relationship with the young waif Kuniang who became his ward.
Richard was only able to give us a small taste of this well-travelled and prolific writer.
As is usual with our parties, good food, good wine and good company made for an enjoyable evening.
